Nerve block injection

Hi

You may remember a few weeks ago I told you about my husband who has primary lung cancer and mets in his spine and pelvis. He is in lots of pain from the nerves in his spine, legs and ankles. Last Wednesday he had a nerve block injection and is still in so much pain. The consultant said it would take a few days before he felt a difference but this weekend he has been in so much pain. The palliative nurse spoke to a consultant in the hospice and he said it takes a week before it starts working. Well if it takes a few days surely it would have started to work by now. The Oxycodone was reduced last Thursday but the pain increased so it was put back up to 30mg. A friend told my her experience of nerve block injections is that it is instant. I am so confused, does anyone have any idea when it’s supposed to work, my poor husband is so fed up of being constantly in pain and I just really don’t know what to do. The consultant is coming to see us on Friday to discuss what happens next, all I want is for my husband to be out of pain xxx

  • Hi snowny place

I am so sorry to hear that your husband is in so much pain, and he has not had any benefit from the nerve block injection. This isn't something I have had any personal experience with. I would suggest you ask the question in the ask the nurse forum  although it can take up to 48 hours to get a reply there. You can also speak to a nurse by calling the Macmillan support line on 0808 808 00 00. The support line is open 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm.

I hope the injection gives some relief soon, and that your husband gets some better news from the consultant on Friday x
