Hi, my father has been diagnosed with Stage 2 small cell lung cancer. I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for natural remedies or personal experiences with this type of cancer that they can share. I’m really trying to keep positive however I want to do everything I can to fight this cancer… Also, is getting a second opinion a good idea?
Hello, sorry to hear about your father.
I do not have experience with SCLC personally, I have been treated for NSCL, but my friend does. She was diagnosed with limited stage 4 SCLC 18 month's ago and her treatment was chemotherapy with additional immunotherapy and is doing well and living her life as normal.
With regard to you asking for recommendations for "natural remedies", I would not go down that route. Alternate so called "natural" remedies have proven time and again to be wholly unsuccessful and, in my opinion, shouldn't be considered when there are very successful treatments available....besides, it will be your father's decision on how he wants to be treated.
Why do you feel your father's diagnosis needs a second opinion? I am sure he has had all the usual investigations for the oncology team to come to their decision on his diagnosis and will have offered the treatment best tailored to him.
Lastly, I apologise if you think I may have overstepped the mark in giving my opinion, but where cancer is concerned, no alternate remedy has yet to be proved successful and many have died unnecessarily because of them. I also think that people on this forum would not recommend them either.
Best wishes to your father.
Thank you, by natural remedies i don’t necessarily mean treatments but things like diet or herbs or anything else that may help with the fight.. By this i mean things that may increase white blood cells or foods that have any benefits whilst undergoing his treatment as he will be doing chemo and radiation which I know can be very tough
Hi, I think you mean supplements as opposed to remedies. A good healthy diet is recommended with plenty of protein, milk, yogurt, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables. If your father's appetite falls short, which mine did while I was having treatment, a good multivitamin helps.
Regarding help raising a white cell count, a supplement of B12 and folate was recommended to me...the body uses B12 to raise the white cell count...but I would ask the advice of your father's clinicians regarding his nutritional needs because they will know through his blood tests how physically fit he is and whether he may need supplements or not.
Best wishes.
Hi Nikola.O
So very sorry that you have cause to be on here.
When I was going through my chemotherapy/radiotherapy (chemoradiation) way back 2011, my main side effect was on both my red and white blood cell counts. As my treatment progressed, both cell counts fell through the floor. I asked my Oncologist if there was any supplements/foods I could take to alleviate this side effect; his response was a resounding "No"!.
Do not despair though; if this side effects do occur there are treatments. Bone marrow produces the white cells, so I was given a 5 day course of daily injections to increase my bone marrow production. I did the injections myself.
For the red blood cells, following each of my 3rd and 4th cycles of chemo I had a transfusion of two units of blood. Pre the cancer diagnosis I was a very regular blood donor, so in a way it was good to experience first hand the benefits of the blood donor system .
The benefits of the treatment are cumulative, unfortunately so are any side effects. Everyone reacts differently to the treatment, so side effects will differ. Some lucky people don't get any!
Hope this helps a bit, and I wish you both the best possible outcomes.

Thank you so much, I’m glad you are better now. I’m mainly worried about the type of cancer he has as i know it’s very unlikely that it will be cured and life expectancy is very low. He is strong, he already beat prostate cancer but considering this is a rare lung cancer we are all very stressed and i just want the best treatment for him.
Nikola Hi
i understand you are looking at any benefits you can help your grandfather with to add to all the treatments he will get I have had an op 2 years ago for lung cancer and had a rec occurance on the suture line and started treatment in Jan 25 You can read my updates on my name and on whoop whoop I literally finished 2 rounds of chemo and 30 radiotherapy today! They kept a careful eye on me so don t worry about that side if things when I needed it they gave me a B12 injection and iron when I needed it I am 76 this year and I got through it ! My son recommended Huel supplements in case of me not eating which contains 97 vitamins and you make it up with water but again check with your doctor my doctors said it was good I was also told that if you can drink between 21/2. - 3 litres of fluid it makes a Hugh difference as you are washing through the chemo or radiotherapy . I will not say it’s easy but it’s doable if you rest as much as he can .Obviously the hardest part with radiotherapy is going every day Monday-Friday for 6 weeks The chemo now I think they have got sorted as so many antisickness drugs so I was never sick and actually was quite surprised at that most of all .You haven’t t said at what stage he is at? Has he had PET scans etc Treatment plan? If you need any help everyone is very kind on here just ask a question or read the lung cancer forum you will find someone in the same position and they will always answer your questions
Good Luck
Jennifer
Thanks so much I’ll be sure to keep cheating for updates and good luck on your journey. He has small cell lung cancer and is at stage 2. He will be undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy starting next week. I’ll be updating too :) Good luck on your journey
Hi
My cancer was Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). It was classed as 'Limited' as it was only in one lung. However there was a lot of it; I saw the initial X-ray!
SCLC is not so rare and can be cured. Since my experience in 2011, the standard treatments such as chemo have been made a lot kinder so that side effects are easier to deal with.
Of course you want the best treatment for him. From the details you have posted, he will be getting the best treatment.
