Rib Pain

Interested to hear if anyone else struggles with pain in the ribcage? This last week both lower ribs feel as though they have been punched, they are sore and bruised, on top of that I have Costochondritis pain shooting at me on both sides, is this something you would contact your oncologist with? Or wait and see if it passes? xx

  • It  was lower right rib pain that took me to the doctor a month ago. Apparently the lesions were in the same area but the respiratory consultant advised this is not related.  Besides after all the x-rays and scans I've had in the last fortnight nothing has shown up there.  In fact last September I had intercostal muscle strain diagnosed and again this spring. I still have this rib pain, sometimes over both sides and it freaks me out as I imagine all sorts of crazy things.  I will ask someone when I see them as waiting for pathology results for treatment and won't get an appointment for a while. Let me know if you get an answer before me please.

  • I've been struggling with similar pain for the last week but it's only on one side - the side where I had a lobectomy two months ago. I'm fairly certain that mine has been caused by suddenly resuming normal activities which I hadn't done for a couple of months.

When are you due for follow up with your oncology team?  I would probably contact them if there's no improvement fairly soon.

  • No date yet as waiting for results. I know the PET scan did not find anything other than a small secondary in the right lung and a flicker on a lymph node. Some of the pain is possibly due to the biopsy and then I had a pneumothorax and had a drain for 4 days. So a bit of bashing about contributes to some of the discomfort.

  • A drain will do it every time.

  • Yes !! Had my lobectomy in December but still get right sided rib pain. I’m very fortunate I haven’t needed chemo or radiotherapy , so I’ll manage this with pain killers xx

    Good morning lovely people.

2nd CT scan on 17 April this tear (R upper lobectomy Dec. 2022) recent scan has shown my middle lobe is compressed. Having bronchial lavage on the 23rd May. Letter to GP from consultant described it as possible middle lobe syndrome,  GP unsure what this is. Regular chest infections but one in December this year & a few weeks ago really floored me. Throat is quite raw & my voice is quite hoarse. Anyone able to suggest any ideas on what's going on with me ?

  • Hi Hetty, Thank you so much for replying. I ended up calling my oncologist helpline this afternoon as the pain was getting to the unbearable stage! They have done a quick check of my scans last week and have said there is nothing to start jumping up and down about on them, so they are leaning on the side of a serious bout of Costochondritis, which I am prone to at times. I have a prescription now for something stronger than Ibuprofen so I might just get some sleep tonight!

  • Hi Lolie, thank you for replying. I did contact them this afternoon. I got to the point where enough was enough! They have over the phone diagnosed Costochondritis and given me a prescription, so hopefully I will get some much needed sleep tonight. My Lobectomy was in August last year so I knew it wasn't that. I hope your pain subsides for you.

  • Ouch that the pain is still going on for you, have you told your oncologist team about it? There maybe a teeny infection lurking? I hope it clears up for you soon.

  • Good stuff I hope Katie. Hope you have a good sleep!
