Hi everyone I’m new to the group but have been reading many of your stories before joining.  My mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer and malignant pleural effusion after becoming breathless and thinking it was a chest infection.  They have also found a small bit in her bladder.  Not sure what started first.  My world has totally collapsed, mum is 82, dad 84 and I’m not stupid to think they will live forever but the prognosis given I’m not ready for.  She has had 4 litres of fluid drained over the last few days and the talc process done, she’s back to herself now she can breathe again.  She’s been offered palliative radiotherapy, not fit enough to have anything else.  I go from being ok to a blubbering wreck.  I’m married and have some good friends but why do I feel so alone? Doesn’t help either that I did the one thing I shouldn’t have ... Google!!  Thanks for listening xx

    Ellie hello!

Im am so sorry to hear about your mum. Feeling alone is so common, even surrounded by loving supportive friends and family. I think it is because they are not going through what you are. Are your parents receiving support from local authority or NHS ( although I guess your dad may be hale and hearty!).

Keep talking to friends and family, and its ok to cry, I do it lots!

This is a really helpful  place and lots of people  on here with parents going through cancer so I hope you get some support. And yes DO NOT GOOGLE!! :-)

Thank you Blush they don’t really get any support as they’ve never asked for anything we’ve just got things ourselves, but mum has received some aids for getting around the house since being in hospital.  They already had a stairlift and wheelchair that they bought themselves a couple of years back as mum has arthritis.  I find I’m better if I’m well informed but will read things here rather than google in future!  Kissing heart

Hi Ellie, so sorry to hear about your Mum. Please get in touch with your mum's GP and ask about available help. Request to be assigned a MacMillan Nurse asap and they should also assign a district nurse too as they will be able be able to come to the house to assess if there is any other equipment/house adjustments your mum might need to make getting around the house and doing small tasks easier. If things get difficult there will also be carer help available if needed from social services, but the MacMillan nurse is the best person to guide you. Not sure which area you live in but My Mum was in Gateshead and I had to continually ask for help for weeks, none was offered until I did this, and it took too long to get put into place so best to ask before your parents think they need it. I hope this helps, and thinking of you all, it does feel like a very lonely time, but good you have your dad there for support too. Take care
