Hi all, I'm new here.
We found d out last week that my mom has lung cancer. They have taken a biopsy of the tumour, but we dont know any more than that. We are still waiting for a call, does anyone know how long we will wait? They told us, that the doctors in Dumfries and Galloway were going to have a meeting with the docs in Edinburgh and would phone us by today? She would be having treatment in Edinburgh. How long did you or tour loved ones wait for more info? It's very stressful on my dad and I, we are really struggling, I'm also 19 weeks pregnant so trying to still take care of myself and my 3 year old son, my partner and I live with my parents, so at least we all here for her. I feel lost and am struggling to be positive!
Hi Gabriella, I’m sorry that you and your mom are going through this. I was diagnosed a month ago and the result of the biopsy came through about 2 weeks after my bronchoscopy. It is incredibly difficult to cope with the waiting and I absolutely understand your and your family’s anxiety.
although this wait is hard on everyone, once the results are through and your moms team put together a treatment plan things will be clearer and much in many ways much easier. You and your mum will know what kind of cancer your mum is dealing with, what the treatment will be and how you can best support her. In my experience in many ways a diagnosis of cancer is often as hard on those supporting a cancer patient as it is on the patient This is particularly true for you as you are pregnant and caring for a toddler. It’s important that you get some advice and support
I see that you’re based in Scotland, do you have a Maggies centre nearby? Maggies have been incredibly helpful to me and work with both the person with cancer and their families.
Things do get better. A month ago I posted here for the first time about my fears following my diagnosis and I got a huge amount of support and advice from people on this forum. They told me things would get easier once I had my treatment plan. I was sceptical but they were right. I’ve just finished my second chemo cycle and am feeling much more positive.
Look after yourself, your mum and your family, and good luck for the rest of the diagnostic process and your mums treatment going forward
kind regards
Anna
Hi , thank you for your reply.
My poor mom has just had the most rotten luck with her health her whole life, she had thought that cancer would be the last thing they would tell her.
I'll have a look re the maggies,
I hope it all gets better, I dont think my dad will survive loosing my mom! It just breaks my heart!
We dont have a Maggie's, nearest is Glasgow
Gabriella, I know this is all very shocking and a huge thing to deal with for your mum and the family. I got diagnosed on Xmas eve via CT. I am also in D&g. I attended Edinburgh last Wednesday for PET scan, and DGRI on Thursday for biopsy. I was told both sets of results should take around a week. The meeting you talk of will be the Multi Discipline Team, made up of Respiratory, oncology, radiologist etc, they all come together to discuss the cancer types, grades and treatment options. You could try calling DGRI asking to speak with respiratory admin and ask if any appointments have been arranged for your mum yet. I'm still very new to all this myself but hope that helps. You remember and look after yourself as well as mum x
I’m sorry to hear of your mums history of ill health, it must be so worrying for you all, and I don’t know if it helps but from my limited experience, this period you’re going through now, was the darkest time for me.
with regard to getting support, Maggies does have an online service which you can access via their website, and there will be information on support available via the hospital your mum is being treated in.
Best wishes
Anna
Thank you, it was the staff nurse who told us to expect a call yesterday, so we were feeling confused by it all and worried!
