My brother, 45 was diagnosed recently with lung cancer stage 4, metastasis in bones. He has just had his treatment set up Tagrisso and drnosumab. He is taking some food suppliments at the moment like CBD, apricot kernel oil, MSM powder. Should he stop taking the suppliments when he starts Tagrisso?
Hi
So very sorry that you have cause to be on this site.
Your brother MUST tell his Oncologist about the supplements before he starts the treatment to ensure that he is not taking anything that may interfere with the efficacy of the prescribed treatments.
I wish him the best possible outcomes

Hello Bogo74. I am also on Tagrisso and you will find a data sheet for it on this website (also known as Osimertinib). Has your brother received treatment prior to this latest regime, as the only way I could start on Tagrisso was through private medical insurance. NICE guidelines only licence it generally as a stage 2 treatment.
John
Hi John.
Before starting you on Osimertinib, did they test you
for the T790 mutation.
The reason I ask is that Afatanib has stopped working
for me and I am awaiting a biopsy to see if I have
the mutation.

Hello Caroline. I did have a biopsy taken that showed I had the EGFR19 mutation and T790. With the NHS I was advised to start on Afatanib, but when I said about private health insurance he told me about Tagrisso/Osimertinib. So far it has shrunk the tumour by almost a half (63mm - 39mm) and last scan showed cancer “stable”. Insurance will only pay for 12 months and cost is just over £7,818 for 30 days of medication. Hope you are successful getting onto Tagrisso. Incidentally AstraZenica are appealing NICE ruling on 30 September.
Hi John,
Many thanks John, that’s helpful.
Fingers crossed for the ruling on the 30th !
Kind regards
Caroline
Hi John,
Thank you for your reply.
My brother doesn't live in the UK. He hasn't started yet. His oncologist set up a treatment with Tagrisso but second opinion recommended to start with Afatanib and if it doesn't help to switch to Tagrisso. Third opinion recommended radiotherapy and cyber knife plus Tagrisso. He has to decide these days.
What do NHS offer you as a first treatment if they prescribe Tagrisso as second treatment only? I did a research on Tagrisso- very positive reviews...
Recommended first stage therapy on NHS was Afatanib
Hi John,
My brother started on Tagrisso on Wednesday. His oncologist told him it is the most effective lung cancer medicine for now, insignificant side effects.
You'd better write to your MP and push NICE to approve it as first treatment in the UK. My brother lives in Bulgaria which is considered as the poorest country in EU but it appears it provides better care of its cancer patients than the UK. You can use my brother's case as an example....just trying to help.
I am British if it matters.
Thanks Bogo74 - good idea. Seems incredulous that Bulgaria will prescribe Tagrisso, but the UK won't. I know that my insurance company are paying the hospital where I am treated £7,818 per 30 das of medication.
