Hi everyone, I am hoping to hear a positive response to my post because I am so upset. My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer back in December 2018. He's had 6 chemo sessions and radiotherapy to his spine and lung. He's also had a op on his leg to make it stronger. My dad is so tired all the time, he has no mobility at the moment as its all caused severe nerve damage he's in bed all the time. He's lost all bladder control too because of the nerve damage. I just feel so upset and it's horrible seeing my dad like he is. He's so strong and willing to try treatments but I'm scared for him. Has anyone got any positive experiences with this cancer I hear bad things all the time.
Thanks
Hi
So very sorry that you find yourself on here.
I do not want to give you false hope; however I was diagnosed with SCLC in 2011 which although extensive had not spread beyond the one lung it was in. I had 4 cycles of chemo alongside 33 daily sessions of high dose radiotherapy. I have cancer related nerve damage in all 4 of my limbs plus my eye and mouth. I have not had any treatment since and to date my cancer has remained 'stable' i.e. no signs of any active cancer. What is the current situation with his SCLC?
I am guessing that the cancer/treatment damage to your Dad's spine has caused the nerve damage? I know from daily experience that the less active I am, the worse my mobility/dexterity becomes. Has your Dad been referred for physio?

My dad had a fall back in 2018 before the cancer diagnosis which damaged his back and he had surgery and was getting back on his feet. Then suddenly Dec 2018 he went downhill and the hospital found tumours on his spine then after scans they found it was lung cancer. He's had radiotherapy to his spine which went well, and then he had to have a rod put in his leg which hasn't helped. He's just got no mobility from nerve damage. The physio comes round and tries to help but all the treatment has made my dad really exhausted. Some days are better than others. It's just horrible seeing him like his is. The chemo went well and shrunk the cancer right down and he had no reaction to it but 9 weeks on its haven't effects now and the consultant said that's what happens with some patients. Just wish it would all improve.
Thanks
Hi
I know you want your Dad's situation to improve; unfortunately nerve damage can take a long time to improve. Sometimes it never improves and the person has to learn how to adapt. Plus 9 weeks post cancer treatment is a relatively short period and it is normal that he is still feeling exhausted.
It is positive that he is getting visits from a physio. Does your health trust have a in-patient physical therapy rehab unit, where your Dad could be referred to spend a few weeks to get the full time physio and attention he probably needs? Have a word with his GP or Consultant.

There are all sorts of professionals involved. The physio comes to the house if needed but I don't think they are going to do much at the moment as dad is so exhausted and still recovering from treatment. It's mad how much nerve damage can affect you. Thanks for replying
Just an update to day sadly my dad lost his battle with cancer yesturday I can't believe how quickly he went downhill and how quick the cancer spread
So very sorry to hear of your loss. The speed with this happening must be devastating for you. Please take the time to both grieve and look after yourself.
