Hi all my name is Mattie and I have been treated with atezolizumab since January the 2nd of this year. Previously, I was treated with Cistplatin and Permetrexed from August 2016 until January 2017 and then maintenance Permetrexed until October 2018. I did well on these treatments and was very active. However ,it started to lose its effectiveness hence the switch to immunotherapry. Since being on this treatment I have become increasingly breathless and less active as a result. I have adenocarcinoma of the right lung. Also I have developed an inbalance of red blood cells (I am producing too many red blood cells0. For this, I have just begun having a pint of blood taken. My main concern is the breathlessness. My blood oxygen sats were 87 the last time they were checked they had regularly been 97 to 99 on the previous treatment . Has anyone experienced similar?
My best wished to all
Mattie
Hi Mattie,
Welcome to the site and I am sorry you have had to join us. I have had the same chemo and went on to Atezolizumab afterwards but I had no problems with bloods and no breathlessness. Having said that the treatment also didn't work for me and I am now on a different chemotherapy. I don't think anyone on the same immunotherapy on this site has mentioned similar symptoms to yours.
What has your oncologist said about these side effects?
Wishing you all the best
Albondigas x
hi mattie i am on Atezolizumab and have been since september last yr. had none of the side effects you mentioned. have had tiredness. and indigestion. and pain that moves about in upper body, the drugs i have been giving seem to be reducing my symptoms apart from that i could not be happier. hope things improve . TC.
Thanks Derek glad to hear that things are going well for you. I am waiting for the results of a recent scan, the last scan I had a few months ago the consultant was pleased with. If the latest results show no improvement then they have suggested that they will revert back to a maintenance chemo with targeted tablet treatment. If things are stable they will continue with the current treatment. I am hoping that things will improve, it does state that breathlessness can be a side effects of Atezolizumab . Thank you for your reply.
All the best
Mattie
Hi Albondigas thanks for your response. My oncologist has suggested things may get worse before getting better. Also that Atezolizumab can do all sorts of things to your lungs , make them swell. I am awaiting the results of a recent scan I hope to know more then. The blood problem is a result of not getting enough oxygen into it and the red blood cells compensating. I am having a pint of blood taken every two weeks in an attempt to address the imbalance. I hope your new treatment is going well.
Best wishes
Mattie
hope you have a good scan. was told after my last scan that things were stable and i was in top half of patients receiving Atezolizumab they seem to have missed out my next scan so have got onacol nurse chasing it up. TC
Thanks Derek I should get the results of the scan this Friday. Very encouraging that your results are reading stable. My breathing is a bit better today. All the best.
Mattie.
Hi All a quick update. I received the results of a recent scan today and it seems that Atezolizumab hasn't worked for me. They have suggested taking a break from treatment for a few weeks. The next course of action is most probably reverting back to a maintenance chemo plus a targeted tablet form of meds. It is possible that .Atezolizumab has aggravated my condition . I am disappointed that it hasn't worked but am optimistic for the future. I hope that you are all doing good.
Best Wishes
Mattie
