I have recently been diagnosed with lung, neck and liver cancer. I have had my meeting with my consultant today and he has said I have to go and have my biopsy next week and then will be treated by way of immuno and chemotherapy. Obviously my mind was racing and I didn’t know what to ask, but he did say that my cancer was not curable but was treatable and manageable and that I should have a good quality of life. What does this actually mean? I don’t want to know how long I have because I don’t want to live to a timetable, but does it mean it will be controlled by regular check ups and treatment when necessary? Apologies - I really should have asked, but is anybody in a similar position able to give me the benefit of their experience?

My lung cancer was treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy in 2014 and has been OK since.
However, I then contracted prostate cancer in 2016 which was treated at the time but then recurred in 2024. At this point I was told it was no longer curable but is treatable and manageable, so the same situation as you just with different drugs. I have been OK since and live a normal life, in fact I'm on holiday abroad at the moment.
It means that you will likely also be on indefinite treatment which, combined with regular check-ups, can continue for years by putting the cancer to sleep so you can carry on enjoying life as near normal as possible. It's possible you will have some side effects as I do, but you soon learn to adapt. I'm sure you'll be just fine.
