Lobectomy

I had stage 1 kidney cancer (CCRCC) with full kidney removal in 2020. In 2021 a new lung nodule appeared (I had 2 at the outset). Roll on to 2025 and my last scan for the kidney before being discharged and they found the new nodule had grown to 12mm. Put on 2 week pathway, lung biopsy and got the result that it is NSCLC, early stage. I am down for a lobectomy on 3rd June. I am pretty shocked to be honest and worried about how the surgery is going to be. I sailed through the kidney removal and bounced back fairly quickly, I'm just worried that this op is going to be much harder.

  • Hi Magsey,

I had a lobectomy in December.

Surgery was on Wednesday, I went in the day before, Tuesday, and came home on Saturday. Just 4 nights in hospital. No discomfort whatsoever while there; the worst part for me was carrying the drain around with me and not being able to shower.

I was given painkillers to come home with, but didn't really need them. Doctor told me. and I quote,

"Your Christmas won't be merry; you will spend it on the sofa with lots of mince pies and chocolate and painkillers".

I don't like mince pies, but took the advice re. chocolate....

Ten days later I was well enough to take the bus to my GP to have the stitches removed.

  • Hello Magsey,

I had my right lung removed by open surgery some years ago and although it wasn't the best experience I've ever had it was much less of a problem than I anticipated.

I suggest you pay particular attention to what's needed after surgery in terms of exercise and looking after yourself and you should be just fine. You should certainly bounce back faster than you imagine. Your outlook after surgery should be excellent - mine was nearly 11 years ago now.

I wish you all the best for a successful outcome.

    Derek.
