Hi, my Dad has been diagnosed today.  Unfortunately he’s very hard hard of hearing and went for the consultation with my mum who gets very anxious.  Subsequently they didn’t ask any questions.  They said the consultant told them that he didn’t advise any treatment as my dad is old and frail.  He said dad should just continue to live his life like he has been doing and there will Be support available when he needs it.

There was a macmillan nurse present and I am gong to try to speak to her.  What should I be asking?

I know you can’t diagnose for me, but it sounds like it’s stage 3/4??  My sister and I’m live far away from my parents so I really would like to understand what is ahead of us and how we can best help my mum and what my dad may be facing and what we can do to help him as things progress.  What we need to find out now and going forward.

Thanks for any insight or advice.

  • first i am sorry to hear of your dad's diagnosis but that they are not aware of what it is.  In your shoes I would want to speak to the consultant or a member of the team and find out exactly what the position is so you can help.  Your Dad would need to give consent Im guessing but you can telephone the macmillan nurse line they are very helpful and have lots of inofrmation and ask them how you go about requesting the information. I would guess a phone call would suffice once your Dad gives authority and perhaps there is treatment that would help him.  there is so much on offer now and don't give up hope because there are marvellous treatments and maybe you can ask for a 2nd opinion. I know that is what I would do. I send you much love and strength to you, your sister and your mum and dad.  The motto is always to stay positive and there will be some treatent that will help I hope along the line. With love
