Secondary Lung Cancer

Hello, thank you for taking a minute to read this.

I am currently feeling really emotional after a a&e trip to hospital with my mam. They have found the heartbreaking discovery of tumours on both lungs and have advised it is secondary. Our family are so upset to hear the findings. She is currently undergoing tests to find the primary cancer. She had a second CT scan today but they couldn't see anything visible so a Bronchoscopy biopsy is scheduled for Friday and an MRI next week. How long does it take to get results from these procedures? We just can't get our heads round it as she has lead such a healthy life. I know this horrible disease gets the best of us but I am really struggling to get my head round it. Months of appointments back and forth to the GP with symptoms and not 1 thought to give her a referral.

  • Hi MTS90, sorry to hear aout your mom and her secondary diagnosis. Its tough out there so many people waiting for biopsy, CT, MRI results. Every biopsy is different and its all according to what they need to do. I have had them back as quickly as 1 week and as long as 4 weeks. CT, and MRI scans can be seen quite quickly if need to be i have had them seen in an hour but they are not all as urgent. What will probably happen is they will collect all biopsys and CT, MRI and when they have the next MDT meeting which is held every week to discuss your moms treatment you will be told. After the MDT meeting you are usally called in to see the appropriate doctor, surgeon, oncologist to talk aout the treatment that is needed. Dont forget there are a lot of different people involved in your moms care. One piece of advice i would like to give you is, get all the phone numbers of consultants, nurses, oncologist, and their secretaries numbers. All CT, MRI, department numbers this will save you so much time in the future if ever needed and you dont have to go through main switchboard. Try to stay posative i have had cancer for 20 years and been secondary for 4 years and i hope to be here a lot longer. I wish your mom all the best for her future treatments.Dawn xx

  • Thank you for responding. Things seem to be moving quite fast at the minute which is helping with the anxiety and worry. She has had a second CT scan of the abdomen on Monday and they couldn't see anything so theyre going to do a Bronchoscopy Biopsy on Friday and she is scheduled for a Head CT Mri on Tuesday. I hope they manage to collect the data required.

Thank you for the advice, that will most definitely be helpful. My mam is a big believer in the power of prayer, we are all trying our best to stay strong. Right now we feel a bit better working on a timeline of appointments. Taking each day as it comes.

I am happy to hear you are surviving your battles and wish you the very best of more years to follow. Take care lovely xx
