Hi I had VATS for a left upper lobe lobectomy on Saturday had my drain removed Monday and home the same day, I'm doing well my only concern is that I don't have any urge to cough is that normal, or am I storing up problems for later on.

  • Hi Bratpackstress

Its good to hear that you’re doing well

I didn’t have an urge to cough for over a week I was in critical care and the physio left me be

Once the cough started it did not stop and I was breathless I did not produce phlegm and my consultant said that it was fine

Long story short, I am now taking regular antihistamine and the cough and breathing has greatly improved. It may be a combination of time and healing but the antihistamine has definitely helped.

You could phone your nurse to see what they have to say.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

  • Hi Ann

Thank you for replying the fact that I was in and out of hospital so quickly I didn't think to ask questions like these, I did manage to shift a little bit of phlegm this morning which I presume is good, the main thing I have to watch out for is that I don't over do things because I feel so well.

  • I remember also after my lobectomy not having the urge to cough ,and when i did it was about 10 days later and was painful to cough because of my incision scar ,but i was given some tablets at the time to make the phelgm looser ,but i cant remember the name of them ,but they did work

  • It's normal but the physiotherapist should have given you exercises to help you bring up phlegm and told you how to minimise the pain when you do cough.

  • Hi

I didn’t have a physio as I was in critical care, didn’t cough until I got home and I’ve never coughed up phlegm

I asked if that was normal and just had a shrug. I still cough and produce zero. it does concern me but they didn’t seem concerned

  • I’m 7 weeks post op . Cough all the time , breathless can’t talk without coughing . Been told it’s normal .  Going to have to get a t shirt done . It’s cancer not covid , getting a few glares from people whwn waiting for appointments.

  • Exactly. I started announcing it’s Cancer as the looks we’re awful.
Mine was March the cough is now better though I’ve never produced anything. I started worrying about that too.
I found talking made me cough.
Think my hubby enjoyed the peace.
Ive learned to talk and breathe now. His peace is shattered
