Won’t tell me histology results?

I’m two weeks post op and all seems to be going well. I had follow up call from hospital couple of days ago and I asked when I would get results of histology on the tumour they removed and lymph nodes, was told would get it at my post op which isn’t for another 4 weeks.
why won’t they tell me? I’m now really worried as I need to know. Nurse seemed to imply they don’t tell ppl as if you do need further treatment, you wouldn’t start it until recovered from surgery.

I’ve spent last couple of days very tearful, which I’m sure is normal after big surgery.
my husband thinks I should ring and insist on the results.

  • Hi,

I think a 4 week wait is probably standard procedure. It stops patients knowing the results before the consultant does. Doesn't do for us to know more than they do Grin

I'm signed up for Patients Know Best (highly recommended) so I get to see all my test results, the letters between my consultant and GP, etc and scans always show "The report will be available on..." for a month before the details get filled in for me to see. (Blood test results usually show next day.)

    kind regards
    Steve

  • Thanks Steve, I’m signed up to a patient portal at the hospital but I’ll sign up to that too. My friend just talked me down, said it’s normal to be tearful and up and down

  • Hi there

I had bowel cancer and they phoned me straight away with the results so a year later when facing a six week wait for a follow up appointment after my lobectomy I phoned my team and asked them to phone me after their MDT meeting which was on a Friday. They phoned four clock with my results  there’s no issue a nurse from my team did it.

I’ve had the results over the phone asap after both operations

Waiting is torturous and not good for your mental health. I would phone and ask if they would let you know

    Good luck

  • Thank you Ann

I do struggle with anxiety so waiting is not good for me. I’m going to ring the lung cancer nurse tomorrow, the MDT is generally Thursday morning so might be able to get some clarity tomorrow.

in other news my daughter is running the 10k manchester run on sunday and has raised over £1k for neuro endocrine cancer research, very proud of her

  • You go for it,

I would not wait for six weeks and told my team. They were supportive. It’s you body and your mental health. I was told it was cancer and they had clear margins if they’d said there weren’t clear margins I would have prepared for treatment. I like to be prepared it helps my mental well being

Congrats on your daughters wonderful achievement raising money.

Good luck with her run will you be there to cheer her on ?

  • Hoping to be at finish line, my family are concerned it might be too much for me or I might get jostled. Still in quite a bit of pain as only 2 weeks post op but really want to be there!

  • You take care. I can understand your family’s concerns
