Pancoast tumour?

Hi, just after a bit of advice really. Haven't been diagnosed but worried my symptoms seem to fit. Apologies for the long post

I have fibromyalgia so i'm used to having daily backache and other aches and pains so at first i hadn't noticed when i started with a new pain in my shoulder. It started off pretty mild, there most of the time but I didn't think much of it (as i said i'm used to having backache daily anyway) just had paracetomol and used my heatmat (not that either took the pain away, just made it a little more bareable).

I visited the doctors (though it's impossible to see a GP so i've been seeing advanced nurse practitioner) as my fatigue was a lot worse and the pains getting worse (at this point still assuming it was my fibro getting worse) and she upped my fibro meds (now on the maximum dose) but after about 6 weeks it's not made a difference which made me start wondering if it's something else. I returned to the doctors and told her about my shoulder pain and she referred me to the musculoskeletal practitioner.

Had my appointment with the MSK practitioner now and she doesn't think it would be pancoast and thinks it's a mechanical problem and she's referred me to rheumatology.

My symptoms are :

• pain in my right shoulder blade, top of shoulder, top of chest (top few ribs) and sometimes in my neck

• pain comes and goes. but often gets REALLY bad

• seems worse at night and can't get comfy in bed as every position hurts or I wake up in pain

• shooting type of pain down my arm to my fingers, causes numbness in my little and ring finger

Not sure if these next are related but they started at the same time as my shoulder pain

• acid reflux. even on 40mg omeprazole i still have it bad (currently waiting for appointment to have camera down to check digestive system for this)

• worsening fatigue

- nausea pretty much constant

- reduced appetite

• bad headaches/migraines

• eye sight seems to be going worse

Feel like i'm getting no support and just told 'it won't be that, it's really rare'. I've got 2 young children and just worried if it was pancoast, delaying diagnosis could be detrimental.

Do these symptoms seem to fit other peoples experiences? Does pain come and go and vary in intensity at the start? (Only noticed pain for last 6-8 wks)

Thank you for reading xxx

  • Hi

I have lung cancer and I too at first thought it was pancoast.  It wasn't, it was NSCLC with bone mets in both upper arms and shoulders.

I can tell you about the pain though, as my main tumour affects (presses on)  the same area that a pancoast tumour would affect.

The pain was Constant. (can't stress this enough)

It did not 'come and go'

It was especially horrendous at night.

At times it felt as if a heavyweight boxer was continuously punching ne in both arms.  I was on the highest dose of morphine and that was hardly touching it!

Luckily chemo and radiotherapy has sorted the pain. For now.

Mine was picked up by xray and then a ct scan.

You probably don't have it, but might be worth paying for a private chest/shoulder xray to put your mind at ease?
