So dad has been diagnosed with T3 N0 M0 lung cancer. He’s not suitable for surgery or chemotherapy. They have recommended radiotherapy to control rather than cure. Literally feel like my whole world has crashed down on top of me. He is 56 with an extensive medical history.

What can we expect. I’m so scared.

Thank you x

  • Hi loopyloo53 and welcome to the online community, but so sorry to hear about your dads diagnoses.
Any cancer diagnoses is devastating, and you always fear the worse. I am sorry that your dad can only have radiotherapy, I am guessing that is because of his other medical conditions.
Radiotherapy on its own can be a very good treatment, and many people have had good results with shrinking tumours.

Do you know what type of lung cancer your Dad has? The T3 N0 M0 is the staging.

    • T describes the size of the tumour
    • N describes whether there are any cancer cells in the lymph nodes
    • M describes whether the cancer has spread to a different part of the body

So although a cancer diagnoses is extremely scary, it is very good news that the tumour is confined, there is no spread to the lymph nodes, or to anywhere else in the body.

Do you have a date as to when the radiotherapy will start?

  • Hi Chellesimo,

the CNS nurses and respiratory consultant have said it’s spread to nearby tissue and nodes in the centre of the chest but are awaiting formal agreement from the oncologist. Surgery is not recommended due to the location of the cancer.

not sure why chemotherapy isn’t advised. This is a question we have for the oncologist.

he is hopefully meeting with oncology on Monday xxx

  • That is strange, as that doesn’t match the staging you mentioned.

Is anyone able to go with your dad to see the oncologist? It seems different hospitals have different rules regarding this during the pandemic. It is a good idea for your dad to write down any questions he has to take with him. Your mind seems to go blank once you are there.

    Good luck x
