What is it and does it take long

  • I would wait until you speak to your oncologist tomorrow Dee before you start to worry about it. He can answer all your questions, and tell you how many sessions you will need, as it Varies so much from patient to patient.

It does indeed, as Chelle says, vary from patient to patient but I can only relate my experience which seems to be similar to many others but yet different from still more...

I had 10 zaps over three weeks - three in the first week, five in the second and two more in the third week.

For the first three, they would re-map the tumour (I was having the RT to the Lung Tumour only) and in total that would take between 20 & 25 minutes and was completely pain free.

Thereafter, once the mapping was done in those first three sessions, the RT took 5-7 mins only and again was completely pain free - in fact, it took longer to take my top off before and put my clothes back on afterwards than the treatment itself - properly marvellous!

Alongside my initial chemo & immuno therapies (which had reduced all of the tumours by 50% at 3 month scans) the RT, along with continued immuno contributed to reduce all tumours to the point where they were, and I quote, "Barely measurable" at the six month scans at the end of Sept last year. Now waiting for 9 mth scans & hoping for Stable Mable...

Dee, I reiterate that this is my own experience and the main thing for you to take from this is that the RT itself should be painless and hopefully, that knowledge will help de-stress the whole process for you.

So tomorrow, when you speak to your onc, you will have a much better idea of what your treatment will be so others will be able to relate their own relevant experience.

Also, the machine used on me was very open, not enclosed at all.

Try to be calm as you will find it helps enormously.
