Hello not sure where to start here but here goes

my Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer after completing a fit test just after his 60th birthday. After scans showed this had spread to the liver.

Bowel cancer all removed but chemotherapy to target the liver. My dad has had a liver resection which didn’t work and is left with only 20% working liver.

6 lines of treatment my Dad has had and been a trooper throughout it all until now. 4 years down the line the cancer has taken over the remaining part of his liver and treatment has been withdrawn.

Dad went into hospital 2 weeks ago with acute kidney failure and was immediately put on fluids & antibiotics and was getting better. He had a build up of fluid which needed to be drained. 9 litres of fluid was removed but the day before the drain was fitted he rapidly declined and wasn’t eating/drinking and was bed bound.

The consultant came to speak to us and give us the news we have been waiting for, my dad has been given days to live. So we talk with palliative care team and we wanted Dad home as it was his wish.

Since Dads come home he came through the door and instantly picked up. His been eating/drinking. Mobility has increased he gets up goes in the shower walks around etc …. He is a little confused but overall has shocked us all even the district nurses.

is it worth speaking to his consultant again? Or is this the calm before the storm? I don’t know what to think anymore!!

thanks for reading

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm really sorry to read that your dad's consultant has only given your dad days to live. This must have come as a terrible shock for you.

As you know, the online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you also join and post in the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others whose bowel cancer has spread to their liver.

You may also find it helpful to join the secondary liver cancer and supporting someone with incurable cancer groups.

To join any or all of these groups, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

    Sending virtual ((hugs))
