Laryngectomy swallowing targeted chemo oral medicine?

I’m writing on here on behalf of my Dad, he beat throat cancer over 20 years ago after full laryngectomy surgery. Sadly last year he was diagnosed with bowel cancer which has metastasized to his liver. For the last year he’s been receiving IV chemo but this is no longer effective, the only treatment left is oral targeted therapy. But he struggles to swallow tablets!! Since the laryngectomy surgery he has always been prescribed dissolvable meds but we’re told that the targeted therapy pills cannot be crushed, cut or dissolved.
There must be someone out there who is or has been in the same situation?!?! Really hoping for some advice on how my dad successfully take the new oral treatment. He had dilation surgery 15 years ago which left him with no voice for a long period so he is reluctant to go down that route again.

Can anyone offer any guidance?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm sorry to read that your dad has been diagnosed with bowel cancer after successfully recovering from throat cancer.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you also join and post this question in the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as your dad and may have experienced problems with swallowing tablets.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I have joined the bowel cancer group you sent and added my plea on there. I’ll also update details. I’m hopeful someone will be able to help!
