Having had my right kidney removed in January 2020 metastases started appearing in 2022. The nodules/lesions in my left lung and lobe were very small and have subsequently disappeared but unfortunately not the ones on my liver and right adrenal gland. I have CT scans every three months which show a gradual increase in size. They are now 32 x 22mm and 21 x 17 mm respectively. I have no symptoms but wonder what size they will be allowed to grow to before I am offered any treatment and what will it be?
I am trying not to get alarmed but I am a 74 year old widow, living alone and have only siblings who don’t live near by so I am trying to prepare myself for what may happen next.
Hello MaryH
I'm sorry to read that your kidney cancer has spread since your operation. I can understand how worried you must be, and not sure of what will happen next.
Although your question appears straightforward, it isn't easy to answer! None of us can second guess what the medics might decide, we can only respond to you from our own experience.
It is a good sign that you are being monitored by having regular scans, and my immediate thought is that they cannot be too concerned about the new lesions, as they haven't jumped in with treatment suggestions yet. Most kidney cancers are slow-growing, and they will know what type it is from your original operation.
I do know that they will take into account lots of different things when deciding on what action to take. This will include the type of cancer, where it is, your general health, any other health conditions, and your age. And also, of course, your own preferences!
To get a more 'medical' slant on your question, you would probably be better to contact the support helpline, as they are the experts!
I hope you do not have to wait too long for an appointment to discuss this with your oncology team. The waiting is so stressful!
Look after yourself, try not to overthink everything.
Take care
Kate
