Immunotherapy

Hi all, I'm due to start immunotherapy (Pembrolizumab) on Monday for a course of 9 treatments over a year. I had a nephrectomy in May and lucky to say all cancer was removed but because there is a chance of reoccurrence I've decided to go with the treatment. I had a ct scan a couple of weeks ago and relieved that all is good. Fingers crossed this continues. Has anyone else had this type of immunotherapy? I know everyone is different in how it affects them. I'm hoping the side effects are minimal.

  • Hi MHaw

Looks like we’re on the same path ! I started pembo treatment 4weeks ago ( same 9 infusions ) i was very apprehensive too but I'm pleased to say so far so good ! Just for some background I'm 46 years old and reasonably fit and healthy . Only thing I've noticed is feeling fatigued at the moment . Maybe we can swap notes since we on the same timeframe /treatment ect ?

  • Hello, thank you for your message. It's so good to hear from someone on a similar path to me. I'm 55 and also reasonably fit and healthy. How long does it take for the treatment to be administered. I've heard it can be from 30 mins to an hour? It would be good to swap notes as well during the treatment.

  • Good morning

I went to St James in Leeds and it takes 30mins for the actual infusion and 10 mins before and after to flush the veins . I was really nervous with it being the first one and not knowing what to  expect! It wasn’t painful and they were really kind so try not to worry . How did you recover from surgery? I spend 5days in hospital and was back up and at work 2weeks later (although family wast too happy about that) I had robotic surgery 5 incisions (1 large 4small ) tummy is still numb 4 months later . Hope the info helps and yes it would be good to swap notes .

  • Good morning

My recovery was good. I went into hospital on the Tuesday and was at home early evening on the Wednesday so mine was just an overnight stay. I had keyhole surgery and had 6 weeks off work. The first week I couldn't do too much but then each day after that got a bit stronger.  My tumour was 9cm and I found out after it was at stage 3 so a bit of a shock but it's been removed which is the main thing.

Its reassuring to know that the infusion is straight forward.
