Pain after kidney removal

I just wondered what other people’s experience of pain has been after having a laparoscopic kidney removal? It’s 11 days since my operation and I am still getting a lot of pain and need strong painkillers. I keep reading info. that implies I should be able to manage just on paracetamol. It leaves me feeling like I’m doing something wrong by still needing more pain relief. I just wondered what other people’s experience has been?

  • Hiya - I haven't had a kidney removal but I have read a lot of posts on here from people who have.  My understanding is that pain can carry on for weeks/months afterwards.  It's a big operation you've just had and your body needs a lot of time to recover.   Suggest you check-in with your urologist or CNS?

  • Hi  , I had a kidney removal, mine was a bit more extreme ( stage 3 radical left nephrectomy + renal vein + lymph nodes) I will say I think each of us handles and carries the pain differently and its all about how our bodies cope post surgery, like Mmum says check in with your urologist/cns, but give yourself time, I'm still having pain 5+ weeks in and fully expect more given the size of my op, your body is recovering in its own time, follow the guidance and advice you were given, slow down and let yourself recover, if you need stronger than paracetamol, then you need them, we each have different tolerances for pain, youre not doing anything wrong at all

  • Thank you - I was feeling like I shouldn’t be needing so many pain killers, but have now got the mix right and am feeling a lot better than I was. I am getting used to the fact that I need to take it slow - just a small amount of activity leaves me feeling tired, but even so I’m starting to feel I’m over the very worst now. Looking forward to the day when I can live my ‘normal’ life again.

  • Thank you Mmum. I did check with the hospital who increased my painkillers. Am starting to feel much better now and am able to manage the pain much better. Which means I am getting some much needed sleep at last !!

  • Sleep is a great restorative. Onwards  and upwards.

  • Four months on and I’m still getting some pain but it’s minimal compared to the first couple of weeks. It does get easier and, as everyone else says, you’ve got to listen to your body and not to try too much too soon. Good luck with your recovery.
