Post operative exhaustion

Had my kidney removed on wednesday, three weeks ahead of the scheduled time. Absolutely exhausted and feeling very low. Have a catheter in which I hate and after a short stay in  hospital I’m now home alone. I’ve had a few visitors but I‘ve always been very independent and i don’t like to put on friends.

There was a post on catheters that said district nurses were very good- the hospital didn’t advise me on this and I’ve no idea how to contact them. Obviously with the bank holiday there’s no GPs. im coping but at the moment everything seems like a mammoth task. Think I might phone Mac millan this afternoon just to talk things through. How quickly life changes.

  • Hi

I'm not surprised to read that you're feeling exhausted and low having only just come out of hospital after your operation.

How did you get on speaking to the Macmillan nurses?

  • Thanks for the reply - three days at home and thankfully friends and family have been very supportive. I didn’t phone MacMillan in the end, I began to feel a bit less sorry for myself. I’m hoping I go on ok until Thursday when I’ll go back and have the catheter out. If I’d not had a very helpful sibling I’d have been absolutely floundering. I’m surprised that there is no medical follow up,a few days after you leave hospital, someone to check your dressings if nothing else. The fact is that if I was really on my own I don’t think I’d have coped at all. Fingers crossed I get through the next three days and that my waterworks have settled down so I’m back to passing water normally. Very helpful to know that MacMillan are there when you need advice - I’m only two months into my cancer journey but they’ve been so helpful and supportive
