Hello,

Newbie here. Going through chemo but was wondering what was everyone's diet like. I cut out processed foods and sodas. Do you all have cheat days? I need ideas.

I'm in a 3rd world country, food prices have skyrocketed and I just need guidance on eating well.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups.

I don’t have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Low Grade NHL eventually reaching Stage 4a so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ is different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.

Sorry to hear about the cost of food where you live. A good balanced diet would help you get through your treatment.

The link below talks about what a good diet looks like.

  • Hi MsTrini,

My husband is currently going through HL treatment and we're working with a nutritionist. Here are a few tips we've picked up:

-- Yes, limit your processed foods and sugars, but not at the expense of keeping your weight up. If you need to cheat every once in awhile to get the calories you need, do it.

-- Limit acidic foods like citrus or tomatoes within 48 hrs of your chemo as they can inhibit some chemo drugs (this may depend on which drugs you are receiving)

--Proteins are important to repairing your body tissue and keeping your immune system strong.  Meals like chicken and rice, peanut butter sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, or even just an egg and toast are all good easy options.

-- If you feel naseaus and can't eat much, switch to smaller meals 5-6 times a day.

-- Keep your fluids up. Besides drinking lots of water, including items like soups, milkshakes, and smoothies will help keep you hydrated. Try to stay away from caffeine as that contributes to fluid loss - if you need your soda every once in awhile, try a decaffeinated version instead.

Hope this helps, and good luck.
