So I’ve been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 27. A crappy thing already, but I’m also a very anxious person in general. I’m not usually one to ask for help and usually keep everything close to my chest, including my cancer. (Haha) I’ve had one cycle of ABVD chemo so far, and in all honesty it’s been really shit. I’ve already been the A&E once for chest pains and I’ve still got them. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had chest pains whilst having their chemo? The Drs say that I’ve got a bit of fluid around my heart but that it’s nothing to worry about, that it’s within acceptable parameters. My nurse says it could be pain from my tumour shrinking. I just want someone to tell me it’s normal, and that it’s almost like a good thing. I don’t know. I’m just worried about it all the time.
Thank you to anyone in advance for reading or replying to me.
Oh RubyDoobie, I was exactly the same. A few days after my first Chemo I was took to a&e with chest pains. It frightened me but had bloods done, xray. They covered everything. Sent home with pain relief and felt so much better. I think we get ourselves worked up and anxiety hits a new level and alot for me was the unknown. Anything that doesnt feel normal get checked out.
Hi RubyDoobie and a welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups.
I don’t have HL but I was diagnosed back in 1999 with a rare, incurable type of NHL Stage 4a so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ is different I understand the challenges of the journey well.
I have had over 800+hrs of chemo over my many years and chest pain along with many other issues can be normal. You have to remember that the chemo attacks your presentation areas but there will always be temporary collateral damage to other areas of your body.
All these issues slowly rectify once treatments are over.
Hi RubyDoobie. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with HL, especially at such a young age. My husband was diagnosed with HL (age 38) at the start of 2020. He was successfully treated and has been in remission since August 2020. He found the ABVD treatment really tough and I recall him reporting chest pains throughout (along with numerous other symtoms and side effects) . It's very hard to keep the worrying at bay, my husband is a deeply anxious person (esp about health!) and it was an immense challenge to manage this throughout treatment and beyond. If it helps, perhaps try to keep the facts in mind: HL is an extremely treatable cancer. Also try to allow yourself to be reassured by the Drs and nurses; they are specialists in this area and would no doubt be quick to act if the fluid or pain you're experiencing was cause for concern. I hope you have good support in place and that the next rounds of chemotherapy feel manageable.
