Hi I'm Chris I have just completed my first cycle of chemotherapy and it's not been too bad I only really have a dodgy stomach after and usually actually feel really good the first few days after my chemo only problem that's started now is that my veins being aching constantly for last four days ,does anyone know if there's any way to ease the pain ?
Hi Stokebloke21 and welcome to this corner of the Mac Community, I am Mike Thehighlander and I help out around our blood cancer groups. Although I was diagnosed with NHL in 1999 I do understand the challenges you are facing during treatments.
Aching veins/arms can be a problem and when this happened to me I put a heat pad (hot water bottle in a pillowcase) on the area and it did help.
What treatment are you having?...... as if you have a number of cycles to go it would be worth talking with your team about a PICC line as this cuts out a lot of these issues. But make sure that they alternate arms used for each treatment.
I would also always recommend you keep your team informed about any prolonged problems like an ongoing ache just to keep them informed.
Always around to talk and to walk this with you.
Hi, to add to Mike’s excellent advice, I would mention this to your Chemo specialist nurse sooner rather than later, at least one of the cocktail of drugs used for HL is a doozy for attacking veins. They may need to slow the drug and add more saline for your next treatment, or maybe advise a form of central line like a PICC.
Hope the next lot is smother for you

Hi Chris,
Ive found the best thing for vein pain is painkillers like paracetamol and if they don't help then I put a hot water bottle on my arm and it really eases the pain. I have also started drinking tea with CBD infusion (from holland and Barrett) and it helps with aches of muscles so it might help with vein pain too. Hope this helps!!
Jess
Hi Jess with regards to CBD infusion. Have you cleared this with your team as sometimes these supplements can have a negative effect on the effectiveness of treatments
I don't have the teas often I'd say once a month? but no I haven't spoken to my team about them? should I?
I have talked with a number of folks who did consider CBD but did ask their team and was advised not to take it as it could reduce the effectiveness of treatment..... but some other consultants don’t bother
I would strongly advise anyone having treatment to tell their team about any non prescribed items they take, or are considering taking. I even checked out multi vitamin tablets.
