Hi, my son is on escalated beavopdac for stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. his PET 2 and 3rd cycle of treatment has had to be delayed by a week as he got a temperature and tested positive for Covid. I’m worried about the implications of the delay.
Has any one else experienced this. Will it effect the out come of the PET scan? I’m worried the delay would give time for the cancer to start growing again?
Sorry to hear this Vlow …… this unfortunately happens and indeed happened to me a few times over my various treatments and it made no difference to the outcomes…… I had 3 x 1 week delays over my 6 cycles of treatment that were set at every 3 weeks.
Although these cycles are in a set pattern there is leeway as the trimmings are also a way of the cancer units to schedule people into the units for treatment.
Hi - This is unfortunate but it does happen, especially with this intense treatment. There's room in the escBEACOP protocol for delays (esp if liver or kidney enzymes go out of spec for example), even for some of the drugs to be removed or dose to be lowered (bleomycin or vincristine) in certain cases.
I would seek reassurance from the medical team but personally would not be worried about this.
The PET would get a better picture and less false positive results by leaving more days after chemo, as chemo itself takes some time to kill / inhibit cell growth, so the longer you do the imaging after last IV the better. That's why interim PET is usually scheduled on the Friday just before the 3rd cycle, as then you have ~10 days from last chemo and you get the better read out. And end of treatment CT scan is usually 4-6 weeks after last chemo, to get the best readout possible.
Of course it is distressing as you have to wait for that result even longer... Hopefully covid goes aways soon!
