Hi all,
I’m getting really fed up of the health problems I’ve had since finishing radiotherapy 4 months ago. My most recent health problem is a fungal infection which has affected my lips and eye lids and behind my ears. Has anyone else experienced this after treatment for head and neck cancer?

Hi Sue
I had oral thrush and a fungal/bacterial infection in the corner of one side of my mouth. It was a real nuisance but eventually I got it under control. Has your doctor prescribed something to help? As time goes on these issues become less although I have found you always have to watch out for oral thrush and keep up really good oral hygiene.

Hi Lyn, mine also started at the corner of my mouth and I have been given turbinafine cream which hopefully will start working soon. As for oral hygiene I clean my teeth about 4 times daily because of gum problems which is yet another side affect. I’m getting so stressed with everything so it’s good to hear how others cope which really helps.
Thanks for your response.

Hi Sue. I was told that the bacterial/fungal infection was called angular chelitis. I had a special cream that was prescribed for the corner of my mouth which helped but the corner of my mouth was still sore after using it for the prescribed time. I found that applying vaseline really helped. The fungal/bacterial infection had cleared up but the ongoing dribble from the side of my mouth made it sore still. It took quite a while to clear the soreness up but it is under control now.
In relation to the oral thrush. I had it for 3 months last year and it was not clearing up with just Nilstat. The doctor did not want to prescribe Fluconozal because of side effects. The thrush was not due to radiotherapy as it was 5 years later. It was recommended by my specialist dentist that along with brushing after meals that I should use a mouthwash of bicarb and salt. This really helped and along with the Nilstat helped clear the thrush up. The mouthwash might be worth a try.
