Pain when eating

I’m not sure what to do to help me eat and chew as it started getting painful yesterday (end of week 2)? I’m taking paracetamol every 4 hours and that’s mostly ok except when I eat. I’ve tried rinsing with difflam and applying gelclair to where the ulcers are but that’s not really working. It’s my throat that’s causing most of the pain. My taste is still ok so I’m keen to stick to soft but normal food if possible. I’m trying things like risotto and shepherd’s pie so pretty runny. Does anyone have any suggestions?

regards

Jane

  • Try gargling with soluble aspirin and spitting it out.

  • Hi Jane

When I started on solid food my CNS advised taking Oramorph 15 minutes before eating.. .swilling it around the mouth and throat area before meals.... certainly helped

  • Hi do you have a peg fitted it might be time to start using it if only  ti get some nutrition in I found the end if week 3 things really ramped up and my ng tube was fitted it was a lifesaver. We all want to carry in eating but not at the expense of nutrition and hydration lit might be time to increase painkillers see your team in the morning. I went into co codomol then oramorph. I also did what Dani suggested soluble aspirin to help ease the pain but make sure you rinse and spit.

  • Thanks everyone I’ll talk to the team tomorrow about some more pain relief.

  • Hi Jane, I agree with Hazel, it's probably time to start using your RIG or PEG if you have one, if not maybe discuss an NG tube, with your team. It's no good soldiering on, when you are in pain, it will give you more stress and worry.

  • The team don’t feel I need an NG tube as the tumour is sort of on the outer side of my neck if you know what I mean so I’m having partial arc radiation which apparently/hopefully means the other side of my throat and mouth doesn’t get the full impact. That’s definitely true so far. Anyway I’ve come back today armed with ibuprofen suspension to take in between paracetamol and also told to use the difflam 20 minutes before eating. I’ve done that and just eaten a good (soft) breakfast. I’m going to try Dani’s recommendation of soluable aspirin as well.
So pain is back under control, at least for the moment Fingers crossed

Whether you need a tube depends on how much pain you are in and whether you can swallow so please please …. You be the judge of that

Glad you have pain under control

Fingers crossed you can avoid tube feeding xxx
