Hi all,
Had my neck dissection this after noon I think 12-2pm ish.
They also took a small biopsy on the tongue they operated on im Nov for a negative biopsy as there are lumps where they had cut
I am in a ward and very sleepy, got sick once and felt better but now give. Anti sickness meds.
The ward is humbling.i think the lady opposite to me got the whole package and can't sleep and breathes from the neck.
The drain is a bit sore but they say it's because I am moving. It's not more than mild papercut.
I don't know what meds I am on and not been given any that I am aware of since woke up. Maybe still from surgery pain killers because i don't feel pain besides pinching one from the drain.
I have been to scared to check what it looks like.
Thank you all for your support, information and company so far.
One day at the time now. Nymph nodes and the small tongue piece sent off now.
Well done Rowan.
I know it’s hard trying to sleep, particularly on a cancer ward, but try to get some sleep. If you feel pain don’t put up with it. Press that nurses button.
The ward is humbling
I know what you mean. I was in to get rehydrated and to have an NG put in. The rest of the ward seemed to be in various stages of departing its mortal coil.
Hugs xx

Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
I am only given liquid paracetamol so far.
My taste buds have gone off for some reason. The small spontaneous Biopsy?
I can feel a stitch on back side of my tongue.
Everything is too salty or sweet. I thought it was the food but after different foods i know the problem is me ( Not now, Taylor Swift)
Hi
One obstacle down, well done.
It’s not you. The taste thing happens to all of us in varying degrees . For me nothing tasted of anything and cardboard would have had a more appealing texture than most things. It does pass. Radiotherapy kiboshed my sense of taste even more. For me salt was the predominant flavour. Sweet took a lot longer. It does return….just takes its time about it.
Know what you mean about not wanting to know what it looks like. I felt like something out of a sci-fi film. The clips look far more dramatic than they feel….and I healed very quickly after removal. Now, unless you were looking very closely…or knew…you wouldn’t see the scar. I was either lucky to have a very skilled and sympathetic surgeon ( which I certainly did. The radiographer at my first MRI said she had never seen so little damage following this sort of surgery…and was calling her colleagues over to look) or I just had enough wrinkles to hide it!

Sounds amazing Liz.
I don't know. Because of the last minute swap of the surgeon I don't know him or even remember his name.
He seems very serious though.
I can taste ok now again. Been seen by a physiotherapist and they said for day 1 it all looks ok and not try too hard as long as I have the drain.
There are people crying and people who don't because they can't. But they are surrounded by family which is comforting and the staff is so nice.
I forgot ny paracetamol on a food tray they took away and when I said about it O got a codeine instead. Free upgrade ?
