5 Years or one Year; take your pick!

On the 14th November 5 years ago I was diagnosed with H&N cancer SCC HPV+.  I have made the 5 year survival stats! Blush

The first 4 years were really good despite almost an annual “re-appearance scare”.  Despite a total of 8 operations I have had a good life.  I have eaten well and travelled to amazing places.  I have recovered from the treatments and walked in the Andes and on Antarctica, hit the roller coasters in Florida, cruised from Miami to Rio de Janeiro and travelled the NC500 to name but a few things.

Now, if you are reading this on the 15th November, then one year ago my cancer re-appeared and this time gave me a viable target for chemoradiation treatment.  That put paid to our plans to travel to Asia (at least for this year) and treatment commenced at the start of the New Year.  Now, 10 months post treatment I am back to doing most things as well as eating reasonably well – although I do have a rather narrow diet just at the moment.  I have just completed a 5 week holiday along the UK east coast including a detour into Wales to do the fastes zip-line in the world!!  All the regular checks seem OK and have confirmed that travel insurance is once again in place so bring on the adventures (suggestions in the replies Wink).

Hopefully this will give some hope to those who are frightened about a diagnosis, or are just starting out on their journey that the quality of life post treatment can be really good.  It is up to you how good you make things.  Advocate for yourself and take an active part in your treatment and recovery.  That way you will have the best possible outcome.

And Hey!... let's be careful out there, but enjoy life.

Well done on navigating a rather tortuous road. Good to read how well you are doing and that can only encourage others.

I'll add that this Community is one of the best resources there is ....a motley collection of fellow sufferers who know how it goes and can prop each other up at the worst and best of times

  • Well done Peter....we cannot let the shadow of cancer rule our lives, getting out and about and challenging ourselves is an important part of our recovery, setting targets gives us something to aim at....17  months post treatment and things are still improving....dental hospital appointment yesterday then off to a very nice Indian restaurant for lunch....tried a chicken Tikka Masala...with a little Bhuna on the side....not an option for the past 17 months ...managed it with no problems...another hurdle cleared.

  • Brilliant news Peter and well done for coming through another brutal journey.

These kind of posts definitely give hope to us all and cement these forums as somewhere really special.

Still having to push myself a bit to enjoy food, but the stubbornness in me is definitely helping. Off to a gig tonight, and no doubt a few pints too. Not as much as before, but anything for that semblance of normality and a good life.

It's amazing how cancer can completely change our outlook on life. Prior to this year I used to get stressed about anything and everything (ask my wife what I used to be like with road rage !) but now I just smile away to myself and realise that there are far more important things to worry about, and life is about enjoying ourselves and making the most of the one crack we have it.

Well done again, and huge thanks for putting another big smile on my face today Smiley
