Post Op Update

  1. I had my neck dissection and TORS mucosectomy on 9th February and I am still battling with food and drink.  I started recovering well and was surprised by how well I was able to eat and drink and then it all started going downhill after day 4 (I had been warned) I’m finding the best pain relief is oramorph but I can barely stay awake taking it.  I’m almost 2 weeks post op now and was hoping it would be easier than it currently is.  I did set back my recovery somewhat as my tongue was so numb and swolllen that I managed to bite through it at some point after my op, and had to have further surgery to stitch it back together. Has anyone got any words of wisdom for me please? Any magic pills out there that I should be asking for?
  • Hi Cariad....That sounds grim....so sorry. Oramorph did the trick for me but like you it made me sleepy. It's a trade off. I used to drag myself outside for a walk round the garden and round the field and apiary with my dog which seemed to force some action into my brain and made me feel better. Have you maybe tried cocodomol, which though it's still an opiate shouldn't knock you out so much

  • Hi Dani - thanks for the reply. I’ve found myself dreading taking my tablets in the morning as that’s when my pain really starts - with the swallowing of them!! I’m grateful not to wake up in pain any more so I know I’m improving- it’s just so slow.  I’ve given up on cocodomol as I dont tolerate it well and I’m now just on Nurofen plus and oramorph. I do need to get out for a walk as I’ve gone from someone who trained 5 days a week to someone who barely walks around the house. This is so not like me but I know I’ll get back to it once I come out of this haze. Today will be better I’m sure! Xxx

  • I made sure my ibuprofen and paracetamol were dispensed in syrup form in ½ litre bottles and squirted them alternately down my throat with a syringe every 4 hours.  It made taking my meds a lot easier. There was always some pain but the meds alleviated it greatly.

  • Soluble Aspirin is good too. Swish around your throat and spit.
