Just back from 2nd ENT check up since finishing treatment in OCT 23.A different consultant this time. When having a look with scope said he couldn't see anything that looked like cancer now but would order the PET scan to check on a cellular level. He said although i'm T4N1M0 I could still get an all clear.
I just wondered can they actually tell by eye if everything looks ok ?.
Has anyone else had a consultant say that to them ?
Thanks Turi

Not exactly.
They can’t see cancer that is tiny. Hence the PET. But they can certainly tell if treatment has failed at your stage.
Has anyone else had a consultant say that to them ?
Yes. Mine says that every time. It’s very reassuring.

Thanks Dani,
Think that helps me to know hopefully it hasn't failed.I'm finding this the hardest time of all except for when I was diagnosed.I noticed recently that you replied to someone about their FIL that although he's a T4 you can still get an excellent prognosis so will keep that with me too.I feel so let down by ENT up here in Inverness and now can't trust anything I'm told by them.He also said that if i got the all clear that was it cured but from being on here i thought we were never cured.I just wonder if they tell you what they think we all want to hear which really isn't helpful.I felt he was very thorough and he spent a good while examining me so a step up from my usual consultant.

I think if your original cancer hasn’t returned in five years you can count yourself cured. You sound as if your last appointment was better than previously.
I just wonder if they tell you what they think we all want to hear
Absolutely not. That would be hugely unprofessional if not negligent.
My oncologist has always been brutally honest.
Of course you can be cured ,Turi. There are lots of T4 survivors. Put that notion away. Hugs

Hi Turi
As Dani says were classed as cured once we get to 5 years and our original cancers haven’t reoccurred. As for what your consultants said yes mine was the same. My ent consultant was old school she used to yank my tongue to one side with gauze to get a good look. I kid you not. When I had my pet Ct scans I got the words no evidence of disease or. NED in techno speak, that’s the best we can hope for. I too know plenty of T4 who are also happily living your life. So no more stressing it’s extremely unusual for our treatment to fail at the first hurdle.
PGoad yiu had a good consuktantion today it really helps

Hi Turi. My consultant puts the scope in every time I see him, I’m in my third year since my operation, and follows up with MRI every so often, I watch on screen , although I have no idea what he’s looking at. He uses the stick to press my tongue down to have a good look too. My consultant so far as always said looking good, I’m praying he continues to say that, and scans back it up. A consultant wouldn’t just tell you what you want to hear, that would be as others have said negligent .
