Well here we are already, week 3 done halfway, down hill now !!!. So week 3 arrived and just as they said side effects start. I've ended up with slight swelling on my tounge, producing a lot of saliva ulcerated patches and a patch that feels like it's burnt!!. My swallow is fine and throat is a little sore but it doesn't cause me an issue. It's the "burnt " patch that is causing the biggest issue. No hot food or drink, no carbonated drinks, no sharp edges.

So now we are looking at how to supplement my diet with cold meals, cant eat yoghurt all the time. Luckily I have a fantastic wife who's doing her utmost to keep me fed and caloried.  My wife and daughter (she's brilliant too) are swaping recipies to try to keep me going.

With 3 more weeks to I'm not sure how much worse the side effects will get, but we shall see I'm sure there is more to come.

  • Well done … half way. Do you have Fortisips or Ensures to top up your calories?

  • You're doing well! Dieticians told me to put cream or olive oil in everything to keep the calories up. Things likely will get worse but not for too long now. Good luck!

PS if you can put some info in your profile, it helps us to know your diagnosis, what stage you're at etc

September 2022 aged 63 diagnosed with HPV associated SCC base of tongue T4 N2 M0. Chemo & radiotherapy for 6 weeks ending Nov 2022. Oct 2024 nearly 2 years all clear. See my profile for longer story

  • Hi I have fortisips(not my fav) but just seeing if other alternatives are out there or suit me better

  • I've just updated my profile, meant to do when I joined but forgot

  • Hi. I had Scandishakes on prescription. I preferred the chocolate ones. Make them with whole milk & they are about 600cal each

Soggy Weetabix with whole milk was my go-to in the early days of recovery, creme caramel, mousse type desserts, custard & cream off top of mini trifles…

  • Yes my go to still is soggy weet bix topped with pureed fruit and custard, also soggy sponge cake made moist with Fortisip and topped with yoghurt or icecream all topped up with Fortisip for the extra calories.
