LATEST UPDATE. Well I had my Mandibulectomy and Fibula Free Flap reconstruction on the 25th of April and came home last week. The only complication was that they had to source a blood supply from the other side of my neck due to RT damage. I think all is going well. I can eat soft foods like Yogurt, scrambled eggs, porridge etc. I can swallow pills. However I do have some concerns as the hospital discharge information is very vague. For example, I was told to eat a puree diet, which i am managing and i was told to buy a baby toothbrush and carefully and gently brush my teeth and gums. I also  have a boot support and a stick. All in all i think its going well, but if there is anyone out there that has any tips or advice I would love some feedback. I think I am recovering pretty well and luckily I can eat most soft foods, and can speak. I am now day 25 post surgery and was checked over at the hospital a few days ago. Getting information is very difficult. For example, I am concerned about the amount of swelling I have in my mouth, lips and jaw. This doesn't seem to be reducing. The medics say that it can "take a while", but won't offer any time indication or schedule or estimate. They have said it looks fine. I did have 33 sessions of RT after the first surgery in 2021 and I assume that this will slow down the healing process, but any information found via Google suggest swelling for 2 to 3 weeks. Can anyone offer their experiences with this type of surgery.

Brian

  • Hi Brian, it's good that you are home now, and recovering well. I can't really offer any feedback on what you have had, however if you have just had a checkup, and the medics are happy with things, that's all good, if they were at all worried they would be on it, right away. Just keep doing what you are doing, you will get there.

    Regards Ray.

  • Hi Brian, 2-3 weeks for swelling to go sounds a very short time to me, but of course we are all different, I was more like a couple of months before much improvement, but I had neck dissection so probably didn’t help. I was told to very gently smooth on bio-oil, which I still do fourteen months down the line. Actually sounds as though you are doing nicely, good that you are able to eat soft foods. Your team obviously satisfied with how things are going so be assured with that.  Take care

  • Hi Brian

Your recovery sounds as though it is going really well considering that you are only 25 days post surgery. It can take a while for things to settle down so you will have to be patient. I had a partial mandibulectomy in 2013 so did not have the fibula free flap reconstruction as part of my jaw was left. It did take me 8 weeks before I was feeling on top of things again. Your op involved a lot more than mine so recovery may take longer.

It's great that you are managing to eat soft food and that your speech is fine.

Wishing you all the best for your recovery.

  • Hi Ray, Thanks for the reply. I think I am worrying about nothing.

  • Thanks June. Yeh, I am sure that you are right and I am worrying for needlessly. The info sheet I got from the hospital was generic post surgery info and mentioned post op swelling for about 14 days. But this was my 2nd op, first was neck dissection in 2021 followed by 33 RT sessions. So I assume that the RT will also influence the speed of recovery.
