Just arranged post-cancer travel insurance.

I thought I’d just pop on to say that I’ve just sorted out travel insurance for the next 12 months, as I’m planning to go to Kefalonia next month. I’m 2 years 3 months post treatment ending.

My travel insurance has for some years been covered as part of my Nationwide Building Society Flexaccount+. This is basically an enhanced current account which includes travel insurance, breakdown cover and various other bits and pieces for £13.00 per month. I’ve used it a few times in the past few years, not least when thieves robbed everything of value out of my car while waiting for a ferry in Barcelona!

Not having been abroad since before lockdown I thought I’d better ring them to tell them about my tonsil cancer and treatment in case it would invalidate any claim if I hadn’t told them. I assumed that my cancer, alongside blood pressure tablets and statins, would incur an extra premium but was delighted to be told that as long as I’ve received no treatment in the past 12 months there would be no charge. (This is limited to 31 days’ worldwide travel so not suitable for committed globetrotters - nor Hazel I suspect!)

Just thought I’d pass this on as I know it’s an issue oft discussed in here.

A pleasant surprise on an otherwise dreary day. M

  • Hi

That's great to hear as I'm with Nationwide but may be differerent for me with a Laryngectomy due to possible voice valve problems that may occur

    Thanks for the info

  • I am with them as well.  Due to reoccurring investigations I've never made the 12 months - although they had 24 months in the policy I believe - so I am only covered for everything but the cancer.  No extra premium and that arrangement is fine.

  • Thanks for sharing!

I have a similar deal with Natwest - I called them to let them know about my tonsil cancer treatment last summer,  as we're off to Ibiza next month. I was assured no extra cost and that I'm  covered for everything apart from having treatment for tonsil cancer while on holiday.

  • Hi Mark, thank you for highlighting this. We did have travel insurance as part of our home policy however this was no longer available over 65. We have taken out an annual policy as we have family abroad with Allclear at an eye watering cost. Can’t help think that we have been taken advantage of here. I will look into these other options at renewal time.

    Thank you

    John

  • Hi John. I’m 66 and the £13 pm includes travel and breakdown insurance - both of which I’ve had to use. It also extends any electrical appliance warranty by an extra year. I’ve used this too!
