Hi, thought I would let you know how my husband is doing, he had his telephone appointment with the oncologist on Wednesday, he told her that he was having problems with eating because of not being able to taste, she suggested a few things for him to try, yesterday he managed some oxtail soup which he could taste a little bit, I mentioned on here how low he is and he seems a bit better, he hasn’t needed any pain relief now for over a week which is good news. Think the oncologist said it can take about 8 months to start being able to taste a bit more, I’m guessing everyone is different? She has booked his 12 week scan in 6 weeks time, fingers crossed we here good news. Can anyone suggest what foods he should be trying to eat? He has a peg and ensures, but really needs to start eating, he doesn’t have any problems swallowing food, it’s really trying to find foods that he can eat and have lots of flavour, and lots of calories as he has lost a lot of weight. Thank you Mandy x
Hi Thanks for the update.
If he can eat food but finds it difficult because if the taste then try herbs and spices. Obviously anything hot is out if the question but you can add spice without heat. Try cumin and coriander. The advantage of those is that you can taste “taste” them by blowing back through the nose while chewing.
You could try pickle. I never had any problem with home made branston or vinegar
Garlic can be hot as can ginger but you could see if he can dunk ginger biscuits in his tea.
Just experiment with herbs and spices. Just avoid chilli
