Hi, I am 21 months post radiotherapy treatment for left tonsil cancer. Saliva is still an issue and I still have some soreness to the side of my tongue and cheek. I have also noticed some numbness to my jaw which is mostly in the morning and my muscle from the back of my ear down the side of my neck feels hard compared to my right side. Anyone else had these or similar  issues?

  • Hi Rut

I too get exactly that after only finishing my radiotherapy on 26 aug , numbness to my jaw which is mostly in the morning and my muscle from the back of my ear down the side of my neck feels hard compared to my right side. I thought it was the lymphoedema I've been diagnosed with. It's better during the day but really bad first thing and last thing. I'd do anything to ease this condition.

I've been having the massage and do it myself as well and just started acupuncture! I thought I'd try everything. I was under the impression that the radiotherapy treatment does leave one's body after a year and do lymphoedema will subside? Sorry to hear of your misfortune

That’s not what I was told. Lymphodema untreated can get harder and harder and become permanent. Best get it sorted early on.

  • Thanks beesuit. Only positive and necessary comments please. It's difficult as it is. I'll hang on to positive comment I can

  • I didn’t mean to upset you. Sorry.
if you are religious in tackling the lymphodema you will fix it. The radiotherapy effects peak at two to three weeks after treatment and there is no radiation left in your body at all. We are all a work in progress. Treatment is horrid and you have to work at getting better but you will get better.

  • Hi Rut

Been reading your story and mine us very simular concerning lymphoedema.

I had radio and chemo in jan and all went ok not easy but i did it had a prob in june when i went for check up was told that my larynx wasnt working and that i needed an emergency tracky.

After the tracky had to have laryngectomy which was hard but i managed was left with a lot of fibrosis under my chin and lymphoedema.

Have been having massage and doing excercises every day and is working but the staff at the lymph clinic are amazing and have helped me no ends

Have told me they will help me manage my situation nd give me a better quality of life

Was wondering if you had been booked to see  lymphoedema specialist they will help you to control the situation and stop it getting any worse.

    Hope they can help you

    Good Luck
