Hi
Hubby had been given a nebuliser ti help with the mucus caused by radiotherapy.
He’s been told to use it every 2 hours and each session takes around 20 minutes .
he’s not sleeping because of the mucus and having to clear every hour through the night .
Question is for those who have experience with the nebuliser , does it work ? It’s a lot every 2 hours but if it’s worth it , he’ll try it . Not slept properly for weeks now .
Thank you in advance
Sharon
Hi Sharon1
Welcome to our forum, nebulising helps immensely in the first place as it thins the mucus, every 2 hours seems a little extreme and I did do 3 times a day for 15 mins with my Laryngectomy operation and also I have emphysema which adds to the problems, I now do after 2 years twice a week
As for sleeping he may be best sleeping propped up at an angle it may help with the mucus, as it doesn’t lay and tends to stay down, but always remember that the mucus is moving for a reason and you don’t say where he had the RT, when I had mine for the Oesophagus cancer it was aimed directly through my middle chest and the airway became inflamed.
Sounds like early days so I hope he sticks with it as it does get better and better
Take care both of you, and hope this helps a little
Tony

Hi Sharon,
I used a nebuliser nit help with the mucus but nit every 2 hours. I fitted mine in round my day from memory I did it around 6 times a day. Always use cooled boiled water or the saline sachets you get with it never use any oils or even cold water. I found it did help I used mine from around week 2 until well into recovery. But every 2 hours seems a tad excessive. I also bought a humidifier for bedroom which he,oed just as much ,also I found moving into spare room helped both if us ,my waking didn’t keep hubby awake as I needed hi, for driving shopping cooking and cleaning so he needed to be awake whilst in teg day I often napped. I also was prescribed carbusistine which helped thin the mucus.

Hi Sharon,
Using a nebuliser and taking Carbocisteine really helped to ease my secretions.
I also didn't sleep for weeks before I got those two things in place.
I had the nebuliser next to the bed and I used it in the night if needed.
I had to be really propped up, almost in a seated position, or I would wake up choking. It was worse if I tried to sleep on either side.
I am approximately 10 weeks beyond treatment and the secretion issues are very much better. I have a dry mouth and the white secretions build up overnight. I haven't needed the nebuliser for weeks.
Best wishes
Steve

Hi Tony
Thank you for your reply
He’s having RT to his tonsil /base of tongue and neck .
Hes had 29 and 6 to go .
Just had a NG tube fitted as cannot taste anything at all and everything is disgusting to him .
if he could just get a few hours unbroken sleep I’m sure it will help a lot .
Thank you, I’ll let him know and he can do a few times a day maybe to see if it helps .
Glad you are recovering now too . It’s not easy is it .
Many thanks
sharon
Hi Sharon
see others are helping one of the things that helped me was Buscopan during the day prescribed by my GP but as I always had problems at night (before)my cancer I took night nurse the GP put me on an allergy tablet for nights which works great
however suggest you talk to either the consultant or GP before changing routines
Take care
Tony
