6 weeks ago I went for a routine check up at the dentist. After a whirlwind of tests I am told I have a tumour on the floor of my mouth adjacent to the saliva gland. It is going to be excised, and possibly some lymph nodes too.
I am reeling! what should I expect to happen?
will I have speech problems?
how long will I be in hospital?
is it a long recovery?
is the post op painful?
any insight would be appreciated thanks.
Good luck Gary. I'm sure your team will look after you. Don't forget your laptop/tablet. Long charging lead for that and phone.Headphones and plenty of data.....Get back to us when you can ....

Thank you Dani, I have been told not to bring in valuable tech like an iPad/iPhone as it may disappear. So I will be off the radar until my wife brings in my proper phone with a sim, which won’t be until I’m out of intensive care. Maybe 2 days, 3days? I don’t know. In the meantime I hope for the best.
Yes sounds best but once you're out of intensive care you'll be back online. All the best.

Good evening Garrryj, i took my laptop, phone and crossword magazines plus some books from the library in but did not really start using them until i was out of intensive care and step down. They locked them away until i wanted them, on the whole, most people are honest but they always advise not to take in valuables but i think it can get very boring without them. Im a bit like you and not very tech-savvy . I know it all sounds a bit scary at the moment but it will all come together with the skill of your consultant and the team who have a lot of experience in these sorts of operations.I used to repair ships and my logic was that they would put their trust in me to repair their boat due to my experience so i fully trusted them in getting me all sorted out, wishing you all the best.
Chris
It’s done. 24th May. 10 hours of surgery. They took out the floor of my mouth, took a chunk from my wrist and that is now the floor of my mouth. Took out some teeth (not sure how many) took a skin graft from tummy to cover the wrist wound. Sliced ear to ear and the skin pulled down to allow them to remove all the lymph nodes. Tracheotomy of course. Still not healed over which is making speech difficult.
I’m still on liquids 17 days after surgery.
how do I feel?
Spaced out? Sluggish brain function. Struggling to maintain any optimism about where I’ll be in 2 months 5 months. I understand that major surgery can leave you with good days and bad days, but understanding and coping with it are not the same thing.
I know I said before the op that this has rocked my world, but I didn’t realise how much it would be.
something I haven’t seen in the posts is I seem to be short of breath, even lying down to sleep? Anyone experienced this?
I am aware the my post isn’t as articulate as it would have been before the op but I’m doing my best.
I this about where I should be after 17 days?
Hi Gary
Thanks for the update
So glad you’re through the surgery
17 days? Heavens I’m amazed you’re managing to write anything.
It’s really early, not only your body but your mind has to recover from the trashing
I can’t help with the breathlessness, It sounds surgery related but best ask your team.
You will get there in baby steps a day at a time. Don’t expect too much of yourself but try to push it along a little.
Are you having radiotherapy as well?

Thanks Dani, I know I’m too impatient but at 75 years old I’m not going to change. They have sent all the bits they removed for analysis. I’ve been called in for the MDT meeting on Wednesday. I have a terrible feeling that I am going to be told that for safety they will do radiotherapy. I’m not sure I can take it. This has not been a good day.
Fingers crossed you don’t need it.
it’s not easy but you’re a fit bloke with a decent positive attitude and that goes a long way to getting you there.
There are lots of people here to help you through too.
There are a few horror stories in these pages but by and large most of us get through this relatively unscathed and make a good recovery.
I was 68 when I finished Tx
Remember it’s only around three months out if your life till you’re in the sunshine again.
Fingers crossed
