My husband finished 6 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy on his neck for tonsil and lymph node cancer. Treatment has now finished but it’s proving difficult to manage pain from the burns on his neck, a tricky are to cover with dressings. Does anyone have any top tips? He’s using silicone dressings at the moment and a gel. Did anyone find anything else  after treatment?

  • I had horrendous neck burns (I was waking up with the pillow literally stuck to the back of my neck!). I went to the GP who referred me to the local specialist burns unit, where they applied Jelonet (a gauze dressing which comes presoaked in petroleum jelly), which was then covered with a soft dressing and held in place with Steroplast tubular bandage (amazing stuff, you cut it and then put your hands in to pull it open, pop it over your head and it holds the neck dressing in place beautifully). All of these are available online.
I agree with what a lot of people have said, that burns are best left to the open air, and this is what my Cancer Nurse recommended, but practically speaking I couldn’t do that, mine got infected from where it had stuck to the pillow, so it really did need to be dressed. also, I couldn’t bear even the slightest breath of a breeze on my neck, it was so painful, and the dressings alleviated all of the pain. I do hope you sort something out for your husband, it’s such a horrid thing and so painful, but he will come through it and it will soon be a distant memory xx

  • Hello

My mum's neck got very sore, looked absolutely awful, she was in hospital at the time as an inpatient due to RIG issues, they gave her a cream that contained silver (I'm sorry I can't remember the name, I will try and find out) she was only allowed to apply it once a day for 7 days. I was absolutely astounded how quickly it healed up, even 48 hours later it was so different! And now 3 weeks post treatment there is nothing there! I only wish the RIG and feeding issues were as easily solved. But keep going. Day at a time.

    Wishing you all the best.
