Hi all,

My husband is due to start week 3 (of 6) of radiotherapy tomorrow for cancer of the salivary gland. He has just started to develop sores and ulcers and I wondered if anyone had any tips for helping with them. He is doing the mouth rinses with salt water and bicarbonate and I have got him bonjela etc but I wondered if there was anything else?

thanks all x

  • I was given Caphosol Difflam and Gelclair and they all helped

Rinsing and spitting soluble aspirin can help the pain too but morphine did the trick for me. The mouthwashes helped protect my mouth and keep it clean.

  • When he goes in tomorrow for his treatment, be sure to tell his team about them, they may be able to give him something for them, or advice him on what to do. Always keep his team updated on any side-effects, they can usually prescribe something to help.

  • Thank you, I will do. He is having a feeding tube fitted tomorrow too, I will be sure to ask the nurse that is doing that.

  • Thank you, I will ask about the tomorrow x

  • Biotene helped me with mucositis caused by chemotherapy/radiotherapy, Difflam spray helped to target troublesome sites.
