Hi
Its been a year after my husband had a neck dissection and cancer removed from the base of his tongue. He still has numbness on the side of his face/ear/neck. Whats really bothering him is the tight strangling sensation around his throat which is 24/7. Has anyone found a treatment or perhaps muscle relaxant that helps? Has anyone tried CBD gummies etc and did they help relax you and neck muscles? We have mentioned this sensation to our consultant but he just says give it time and massage the area to loosen the scar tissue. Its no better and looking for hope that there is something out there that can be done or give relief.
Thank you
No but its one of the things im going to speak to my husbands consultant about tomorrow
Do let us know if you get anywhere. If you draw a blank. Thor Laser is the company who supply hospitals and you might be able to locate one trust who do use it

Thanks for the attachment.
Yes the humidifier helped a bit but I found the odd bubbling noise it made randomly woke me up! I’ve also tried taping my mouth at night so I breathe through my nose to try to stop the throat dryness. There’s a lot of good studies and I read a book recommended by my private physio about how good nose breathing is for us but that’s a bit niche and your husband may not want to try that!
Do be careful when you look for a massage therapist. Make sure they are fully qualified in post surgical treatment and completely understand the surgery your husband has had. The NHS physio I went to had no idea about what to do but to be fair just left it alone and concentrated on strengthening. Our necks aren’t the same now and need careful handling and I’m particularly sensitive to touch around my neck. The massages do relieve the tightness in the sides of my neck and around the back of neck but not the strangling. I have shoulder/back problems from damage to the spinal accessory nerve, so I mainly go for a bit of relief for that too. I did find the massages help me mentally strangely too, it was just good to have someone listen and try to help and to lie there and switch my brain off and have a “treatment” for a while.
I’m guessing lasering would be to break the scar tissue down? but as this occurred straight after surgery, so can’t be scar tissue, I can’t see how that would directly help but I guess if the scar has tightened and made it worse, then yes that’s definitely worth a try. Mine hasn’t got worse over the years, apart from like your husband varies slightly as my muscles get tired throughout the day. I just find I’m adapting and accepting this is my new normal now.
Funny, I hated the thought of massages or anything like that and up to my surgery at 56 had never had one but now I can’t get enough of them!! I was recently treated to a spa with my daughter for the first time and the dry sauna and hot jacuzzi were amazing and gave me a bit of relief!! I’m hooked!
Good luck with the consultant today, keep us updated and all the best to your husband. x

Hi
Well yesterday our consultant advised that the sensation of being strangled is going to be my husbands new normal and that he needs to accept it basically. The consultant said all these different treatments like laser, massage therapy will not take the sensation away. If it did he would be referring my husband to do these things. Over time he will get used too his new normal. I still think he needs something to relax his mind in the evening so if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears x
Hmm yes well that’s pretty much how I have been left with it too unfortunately. Please do reassure him that with me anyway, nearly 2 years on and my brain doesn’t obsess on it quite so much now and I do seem to have accepted it at last. I still do think maybe a chat to your GP about a course of anti depressants to calm the anxiety at least? I agree with your husband if we’re anxious about something our throats tighten up naturally, add that to the existing strangling feeling and it feels doubly bad. As I said before I seem to be more stable and calmer now and I think that has given my brain a chance to deal with everything calmly rather than spiralling, if that makes sense?
Distraction is the key I find. If there’s something he loves doing, even just a small walk, especially with Spring on the way, then I find I don’t think about it so much. Definitely keep his neck warm too, even indoors. The cold makes me feel the strangling much worse. I do look a bit daft in a t-shirt and wool scarf at the moment though!!
It’s no answer I know but please do pass on my experience that in my case I have accepted it and I’m getting on ok.
Best wishes to you both x
