Can someone explain to me why an unknown primary in the oropharynx (hpv) does not relate to an unknown primary cancer anywhere else in the body?  Someone mentioned it in this group but I was never told the reason why it’s not as “serious as other cups. God bless

  • Yes I have.  I do like to hear others opinions from this group also which is why I ask. So many of you have tons of knowledge.

  • I don’t think any of us are better informed than your husbands oncologist. I was simply trying to describe the geography of the lymphatic system and to explain why the primary is where you have been told it is.

  • why it’s not as “serious as other cups.

Because it’s easier to guess with a very high degree of accuracy where an SCC in a neck node has come from so the right area can be targeted with radiotherapy.
HPV SCC is very sensitive to radiation

Yes I’m sorry, I’ve muddied the waters for you. Macmillan has a section called Ask The Nurse which can probably give you a clearer explanation

    You could try there

  • Hi ,when I was told I had cancer in my lymph node under jaw near my ear ,my consultant tried to see if there was a primary at the back of my tongue using a nasal scope ,but at time couldn't see anything ,he said it would have 99,% that it came from tongue or tonsil area but had to do a more detailed exploration while I was under general anaesthetic. So I had investigation while I was under and he found the primary at the base of my tongue. His words were "I've biopsied the hell out of it" it is very rare for it to spread further down the body. But they do check your chest area, I also had a full body scan somewhere along the line of diagnosis. But nothing showed up that was significant.

    Hope this helps
