Taste changes after chemotherapy

I am on a work party reviewing a fact sheet that the Cancer Council of Australia ( I live in Australia) is putting together on 'Understanding Taste and Smell Changes' One fact that I am not sure is quite right is the statement in the fact sheet that patients who have only chemotherapy normally get their taste back within 2 months. I am not sure that this is the reality. Can anyone who has had CHEMO ONLY let me know what their experience of getting their taste back was. I know if you have chemo and radiotherapy that makes the taste return longer but this is chemo only. I want to make sure that the fact sheet is realistic with their info.

Thank you

Lyn

  • Morning Lyn. Strange question to deal with when applied to our cancers. Most are SCC and SCC doesn’t respond very well to chemotherapy alone which is only ever used with RT anyway.

  • Hi Lyn, you're probably better off asking in one of the other sub forums.. for instance, my wife suffered a change in taste during the later stages and a few weeks after her chemo for Lymphoma.. just a thought..

  • The fact sheet is not only for head and neck cancers but all cancers. I did not realise that chemo only did not happen with our cancers. I only had radiotherapy so not in the know about the side effects of chemo from a personal experience. Thanks for your input.

  • Thanks Loz. Could you ask your wife how long it was approx. before her taste returned to normal.

    Thanks

  • Ah

The fact sheet is not only for head and neck cancers but all cancers.

Then it depends on the chemo. There are lots of protocols. I know Cisplatin causes a metallic taste while in treatment but it goes away afterwards.

  • taste is still a problem.. it depends on what she is eating.. sweeter things tend to do better.. still in recovery, so cannot give you a realistic time frame ATM..
