Question about diagnosis procedure

Hello everyone, so I have had a swollen uvula with a white mark on it, since at least late October.

Went to GP who said they weren't too worried but would refer me.

I saw the ENT today, who decided to do a biopsy and order and MRI. Felt my neck and she didn't feel anything but still said an MRI.

She did say she had low, low suspicion, more than once, is this normal procedure?

Many thanks.

  • Hi Colacao

ENT have seen it all before...consultant cannot be sure but is covering all bases, biopsy will reveal any abnormalities...normal procedure ....

  • Hello Peter, thank you so much for your message. Just to check, what about the MRI aspect. She checked my neck and found no lumps or swelling, and I haven't felt any, but still wanted to do the MRI, is this also routine?

  • Hi Colacao, yes, that's about the normal procedure, the biopsy and MRI are so they can be sure what is going on. It's good she is being thorough.

    Ray.

  • Amazing, thank you

  • I had 2 biopsies ...first was inconclusive...no MRI until after results....your ENT consultant is being very thorough which is excellent

  • Hi. I had an MRI first then a biopsy. Did your ENT biopsy today?

  • I had 3 biopsies and 1 MRI and 1 CT

1st biopsy was inconclusive. 2nd one was on the tumour they took put and 3rd one was for double checking as I was going to a surgery anyway so why not...

You might want to bear in mind one thing. I had my MRI 1 week after the biopsy. While my biopsy lab results were inconclusive, the MRI showed a growth of 4cmx3.5cm.

I didn't. That growth wasn't visible in a CT a months later and when they went inn they found a tumour that was 3.5mm which is a completely different story.

When you have scans after a biopsy or surgery the MRI might show swelling and inflammation on or around the biopsy site that are misleading.

This might be something to keep in mind and mention to your consultant.
