  • Hi I am 6mths post radiotherapy and have noticed my ear canal seems to have shrunk. Trouble putting in earplugs and inside feels very dry and I can only hear perfectly out of it when my jaw opens. Anyone else had this and can anything be done about it? Thankyou x
  • Good evening Batwoman, i have not heard of this problem before, i would speak to your consultant or one of their team, i use earplugs every night and found the wax ones ( Boots) the best as they mould to shape easier because they become warm and malleable. Hopefully, someone who has had the same issues will post their comments, wishing you all the best, take care.

    Hi

I am waiting for an NHS assessment ,having already had a private one, as I have lost top end hearing in my ear on the cancer affected side. My ear canal hasn't shrunk but it has lost a lot of its lubrication and all the little hairs are gone, leaving the skin shiny. My audiologist says this is RT damage, as is the hearing loss. So not quite the same.

As an experiment I put my fingers in both ears and there is a significant narrowing of both canals when my mouth is closed so I guess that's normal and due to the position of the jaw....I never knew that!

  • Morning Dani,I haven’t had a hearing test yet, are you being fitting for an aid then? Could we have drops in for the dryness you think . Thanks for reply, Pam x

  • I tried private aids. They work really well but at 4K I can’t afford them. Unfortunately the NHS won’t accept my private test so I am in the queue for a non urgent appointment at a hospital… sigh. Not sure about the drops. Maybe your GP might help?
