Dad finished radiotherapy in October for tonsil cancer, on Wednesday he had the 3 months pet scan to see if all gone or spread. He has been asked to go into see his consultant on Wednesday and he is very scared that has not worked, is this normal to be called in? He is a private consultant but treatment was nhs
It is normal to be called in for results. I was called in for both my post-treatment CT and PET scan results.
PET was required because the CT scan showed "something" in my chest nodes. PET was unable to differentiate between cancerous activity and infection/inflammation (again, apparently very normal).
After PET it was a bronchoscopy and I was given the all clear over the phone for that.
Was told by my specialists that typically they won't give scan results out over the phone so, whilst it's easier said than done, my advice would be not to worry at this stage.
All the best.
Even if good news are you called in?
Yes. Most of us were.
Sometimes there is a hiccup like mine but all’s well in the and. I had a hot spot but on biopsy there was no cancer there.
My oncologist told me there is an increasing consensus that 12week scans are too early. FifeFlyer75 has pointed out that radiologists reading PETs sometimes find it difficult to differentiate between active inflammation and cancer.

Yes I was called in for my post treatment results - complete metabolic response
Our clinicians are human and I think the quite like the ability to give positive news after having to deliver devastating news earlier in our journeys.
Hi yes perfectly normal .Like the others have said the oncologist s give us the bad news so it’s only fair that they give us the good news. It’s not news I would want delivered over the phone either way. Mine was 18 weeks after treatment as my trust didnt do them at 12 weeks as they say it’s too early to scan as hot spots can still be around p. So although I had to waitb18 weeks for my pet ct scan I was ok with that as I knew from the start the wait would be that long.
best wishes finger x all ok
