Hello

I had my 1st appointment with my consultant last week. He went through the official diagnosis and the plan for surgery.  I have a tumor 1 x 1.5cm in the parotid gland.  I will be having surgery to remove this and there was also talk about removing some of the lymph nodes.

I was told that I will be staying in hospital for 5 days after surgery. Has anyone had this and been allowed home before the 5 days?

Is this normal procedure for this type of cancer?

How long were you off work afterwards?. He mentioned 4 weeks, but as I work with young children,  I think that i would need longer off to make sure it was healed properly.

What is the recovery period like?  Are you allowed to eat normal food or is it a special diet for a couple of days

Sorry for all the questions

Thank you

  • Good evening Minimac, there are no set rules as we all recovery at different rates plus it depends on how much surgery is in volved once the start the procedure. During my first surgery i had saliva glands and lymph nodes removed plus the floor of the mouth. I would say that 5 days in an average but dont be alarmed if you stay in longer, its always best to stay in a bit longer rather than go home to early. Four weeks does sound to early to return to work , i would say that 3 months is a safer bet rather than rush back to work. Again it just depends on how you recovery and feel in yourself so dont feel you have to rush anthing. I expect you will be on a soft or liquid food supplemts to begin with mainly because you will find the lack of saliva which takes a bit of time to recover and adjust. Wishing you all the best, take care.
