Selective or sentinel neck dissection?

My surgery is Thursday for tongue cancer with flap.

my lymph scans show clear but they want to remove as a precaution. I am terrified of lymphodema!!

they want to do a selective dissection where they remove all the lymphs from 4 areas but the sentinel dissection seems much better as I really want to keep my lymphs.

I would love to hear from others what type of neck dissection you had and if you had any long terms lymphodema? I’m not worried about the few months after surgery I’m talking long term, life long impact.

thank you

  • Has radiotherapy been mentioned?
A selective dissection removes only some lymph nodes leaving some behind.
    Has your surgeon discussed lymphoedema?
I haven’t had this surgery but there are quite a few people here who have and managed the swelling till it disappeared. Hopefully somebody will help you with an answer

  • I have not had this yet but I am due one this Thursday.

I waa recommended it as a precaution and it would be selective. I was told of possible aide effects such as a drop of the shoulder, corner of the lip and nerve damages.

I have one nymph node that swelled, calmed down and is back now. They were like don't worry we will cut it out anyway.

I never knew such scary statement could be a reassurance but I get it makes sense.

  • P.s. tongue surgery without flap done end Nov. T1 tumour.

  • Thank you. Radiation will happen if there is cancer in the lymphs of the margins where they’re taking the tumour.

  • Thank you. How are you getting on with speech and eating since the surgery? Does your tongue bend round?
